Guide bushing or not? And other things worth asking.

What is a Swiss-type lathe?
A Swiss-type, or sliding-headstock, lathe moves the bar stock through a guide bushing while the tools stay fixed in Z. Because the material is supported within a few millimeters of the cutting tool, deflection is almost eliminated — which is what allows long, slender, tight-tolerance parts to be turned complete in a single cycle. Conventional lathes hold the bar in a chuck and cantilever it out toward the tool, so accuracy falls off as the part gets longer.
What does “guide-bushing-less” mean, and when do I want it?
A guide-bushing-less Swiss machine can run with the bushing removed, gripping the bar in the spindle directly. You lose the deflection support for long slender work, but you gain two things: no bar remnant left behind at the end of each bar, and no requirement for precision-ground bar stock. For short parts in expensive material — titanium, Inconel, medical-grade stainless — that saving is usually larger than the accuracy you give up. The 36-CS and 52-CS Y2 run without a bushing; the SL-32ABY, SL-20Y2 and SL-42Y2 are hybrids that run either way.
What bar sizes do these Swiss machines cover?
20 mm through 51 mm — roughly 0.79 inch to 2 inches. SL-20Y2 at 20 mm, SL-32ABY at 32 mm, 36-CS at 36 mm, SL-42Y2 at 42 mm, and 52-CS Y2 at 51 mm.
Can a Swiss machine do milling as well as turning?
Yes. Every machine in this range carries driven live tooling — from 8 driven positions on the SL-20Y2 to 13 on the SL-32ABY and 52-CS Y2. With a Y axis you can mill off centerline, and on the SL-32ABY a programmable B axis swings the driven tool to any angle, so angled holes and compound features get cut while the bar is still in the collet instead of going to a mill for a second operation.
Do these machines run unattended?
They are built for it. Bar feeders, parts catchers and conveyors are standard or available across the range, and cutting-oil chillers hold thermal position through long runs. LOMA also supplies robotic and gantry automation for load and unload where a part needs it.
