Gang-tooled and production lathes.

A turret spends one to three seconds indexing between every tool. On a thirty-second part running fifty thousand pieces, that is weeks of spindle time. Gang tooling puts every tool on a slide that is already moving, so the next tool arrives as the slide travels — no index at all.

For short, high-volume work it is simply the faster architecture. LOMA supplies two gang-tooled lathes and a gantry-loaded production turning center, the last built in Japan by Hasegawa.

Two gang-tooled cross-slides working against twin opposed 6,000 RPM spindles, with a C axis on both for live tooling. Simultaneous main and sub-spindle machining with no turret on either end — faster than a twin-spindle twin-turret lathe on the work it suits. Spindle oil cooler included.

A production turning center with the automation built in: a two or three-axis gantry loader with a twelve-station rotary stacking magazine and lifter, handling workpieces from 3/8″ to 3.15″ diameter. An 8-station hydraulic turret indexes in 0.8 seconds. Built for high-production fasteners and small turned parts running unattended, with optional bowl feeders. Made in Japan by Hasegawa.

Questions

Worth asking before you buy.

When is gang tooling faster than a turret?
On short-cycle, high-volume parts where index time is a meaningful share of the cycle. A turret takes one to three seconds to index; a gang slide takes none, because the next tool arrives as the slide is already travelling. On a thirty-second part at fifty thousand pieces a year, eliminating two seconds of indexing per tool change returns weeks of spindle time. On long-cycle or heavily-tooled parts a turret usually wins, because a gang plate holds fewer tools.
How many tools can a gang plate hold?
Fewer than a turret, which is the trade. The 32-GT carries a 8.66 x 36.45 inch tool plate with three T-slots on 63 mm centers, taking 20 mm square-shank turning tools and 32 mm internal tooling. The 52-GTS runs two gang slides, one per spindle, each with five T-slots. If a part needs more tools than a plate holds, a turret machine is the better answer.
Can gang-tooled machines do live tooling?
Yes. The 52-GTS has a C axis on both spindles for driven tooling, and the 32-GT offers optional driven tools with a 2:1 speed reduction for torque, using ER20 collets in a hydraulically positioned upper/lower format.
What is the C24 G for?
High-production small turned parts and fasteners, running without an operator. The gantry loader is built into the machine with a twelve-station rotary stacking magazine, so parts load and unload continuously. Bowl feeders are available. It is built in Japan by Hasegawa Machine Works.
One relationship

Machines from LOMA. Everything they run on from NSIT.

Gang platforms live or die on tool life and repeatability. NSIT handles the cutting tools, holders and the inventory program behind them.

Tooling for gang setups

Short, rigid tooling for gang slides, plus the reorder program that keeps a production lathe from stopping on a consumable.

Tooling, workholding and the crib

Our sister company North Shore Industrial Tool handles what the machine runs on — cutting tools, toolholding, workholding, metrology and a managed inventory program. Same people, same phone number, so the machine arrives with the tooling package already sorted.
