Turn and grind, in one clamping.

The Spinner MicroTurn Grind is an ultra-precision hard-turning machine with internal and external grinding built in. Fine-turn the part in its hardened state, then grind it with a 400 mm external wheel and up to two internal grinding spindles — without re-chucking. Grinding stock shrinks, cycle times drop and accuracy stays in one setup.

It is built for the bores and diameters that normally go out to a grinder — hardened shafts, bearing seats, bushings and sealing faces — where roundness and finish decide whether the part passes.

Two opposed high-precision workpiece spindles, each moving in X and Z, on a monoblock bed with three-point support. A 12-station servo turret at the bottom of the work area does soft and hard turning, inside and out, on both spindles — plus milling with live tools and Y.

The slides position in the sub-micron range on direct measuring systems with 0.0001 mm resolution. The guideways are sealed off from the work area and its grinding dust, so the machine suits low-maintenance series production. Choose the MicroTurn 36 (36 mm bore, 7,000 rpm) or MicroTurn 52 (52 mm bore, 5,200 rpm); the sub spindle is optional and a single-spindle build is available.

The 10,000 rpm MicroTurn 36 uses a hydraulic closed-center cylinder without a through-hole for bar. Weight quoted for the long version with main and sub spindle 52 and turret. North American options confirmed at quotation.

External. A water-cooled built-in motor spindle, mounted at the top of the work area and inclined 12° to the workpiece spindle — so it can angular-infeed grind and peripheral-grind end faces. The 400 mm wheel gives stock-removal rates and wheel life comparable to a classic cylindrical grinder, and automatic fine balancing can be integrated in the spindle shaft.

Internal. Up to two identical grinding spindles, each programmable to 90,000 rpm for small bores and each orientable toward the main or the sub spindle. Wheels are dressed automatically and fine-balanced during the process.

When turn-grind pays

The part is turn-then-grind by nature

If a part is hard-turned, walked to a grinder, re-indicated and ground, every one of those moves is time and a chance to lose concentricity. Doing both in one clamping removes the second setup and the outside lead time, and because the turning leaves only a minimal allowance, the grinding itself gets shorter.

Turn-grind questions

Why grind on a lathe? And other things worth asking.

Why grind on a lathe?
Because the part never leaves the chuck. A hardened diameter or bore is hard-turned to a minimal grinding allowance and ground in the same clamping — no re-location error, no queue at the grinding department and no outside vendor.
Is this a hard-turning machine or a grinder?
Both. Spinner calls the MicroTurn Grind the first true combination of an ultra-precision hard-turning machine and an internal and external grinding machine: a 400 mm external wheel, up to two 90,000 rpm internal grinding spindles, and a 12-station turret with live tools and Y.
Can it grind non-round shapes?
Yes. Polygon and other non-circular shapes are ground by interpolating the workpiece C axis at creep speed. Threads, recesses and contours can be hard-turned at up to 10,000 rpm on the workpiece spindle.
Does it need a sub spindle?
No. An identical sub spindle is optional; with it, the part is transferred and the back side finished in parallel. The machine is also built as a single-spindle version.
What if the part needs heavy milling too?
The turret handles milling with live tools and Y — flats, keyways and contour elements, soft or hard. For parts that are mostly milled, the MicroTurn LTBS on our ultra-precision turning page adds a full 5-axis milling spindle.
