Ultra-precision turning, tolerance fields under a micron.

Spinner’s MicroTurn series is built for turning where the tolerance is written in microns: thermal expansion close to zero, tolerance fields under 1 µm and clamping sensitive enough for thin-walled parts. It runs bar-fed, from single parts to automated series production.

One machine, three configurations. The MicroTurn LT turns on one spindle from a gang table and a live-tool turret with Y axis. The MicroTurn LTB adds a 12,000 rpm B-axis milling spindle with tool changer. The MicroTurn LTBS adds an identical opposed second spindle.

MicroTurn LTSingle spindle

Precision turning from a gang table and a Y-axis turret

Spinner MicroTurn LT single-spindle ultra-precision lathe, door open: main spindle, gang tooling plate and lower turret

The same machine as the LTB and LTBS, configured for turning: one 5,200 rpm precision spindle moving in X and Z, a linear tool table (gang post) for fixed precision turning tools, and a live-tool turret with Y axis below. Every linear and rotary axis reads a linear scale. For long runs of small, round, tight-tolerance parts.

MicroTurn LTBSingle spindle + 5-axis

Submicron turning with a B-axis milling spindle

Spinner MicroTurn LTB ultra-precision turn-mill center, door open: main spindle, B-axis milling head, gang table and lower turret

The LTBS without the second spindle. One built-in 5,200 rpm precision turning spindle moving in X and Z, with three tool zones: a gang table for fixed precision turning tools, a turret with Y axis below, and a milling spindle with tool changer, B axis and Y axis above — up to 72 tools. Every linear and rotary axis reads a linear scale. For parts finished from one side, or where back work runs as a second operation.

MicroTurn LTBSSubmicron + 5-axis

Twin-spindle submicron turning with a full 5-axis milling spindle

Spinner MicroTurn LTBS twin-spindle ultra-precision turn-mill center, doors open: opposed spindles, B-axis milling head, gang table and turret

Two opposed, identical 5,200 rpm turning spindles moving in X and Z. Between them, a gang table for fixed precision turning tools, a 12-station live-tool turret with Y below, and a 12,000 rpm B-axis milling spindle with tool changer above — up to 72 tools. Every linear and rotary axis reads a linear scale. Soft turning, hard turning and micro-finishing in one machine, on a footprint of about 10 × 10 ft.

Where the MicroTurn fits

Round parts, submicron, bar-fed

For a milled optical or mold surface, look at the Shibaura UVM. For a hardened part that needs a ground bore or diameter, look at the MicroTurn Grind. For a round part held to microns, with or without milled features, this is the page.

Ultra-precision questions

Under a micron? And other things worth asking.

What tolerance does the MicroTurn hold?
Spinner specifies workpiece tolerance fields under 1 µm, with thermal expansion close to zero. That is why it is used in optics, medical, precision mechanics and hard machining.
Does the MicroTurn compete with the Shibaura UVM?
No. The MicroTurn is a bar-fed turning platform for round parts. The Shibaura UVM is a vertical nano-precision milling center for mold and optical surfaces. They solve different parts.
Can the MicroTurn mill?
The MicroTurn LT mills with live tools on its turret, with Y axis. The LTB and LTBS add a full 5-axis milling spindle: 12,000 rpm, B axis, tool changer and up to 72 tools. The LTBS also adds an opposed second spindle.
Which bar sizes?
36 to 52 mm bar (1.42 to 2.05″), on 5,200 rpm workpiece spindles.
