Ten GEN MILL machines covering a 12.59″ compact 5-axis envelope through to a 63″ three-axis bed and a double-column bridge machine built like a CMM. Glass-scale feedback, roller-bearing linear ways and through-spindle coolant across the range.

The five-axis machines carry glass scales on the rotary axes as well as the linear ones, so position is measured at the table rather than inferred from the servo — which is what holds a tolerance as part height grows.

The 5X-T variant adds 2,000 RPM live turning on the same trunnion, so complex precision parts finish in a single setup.

The four 3-axis GEN MILLs are the same machine built at four sizes. Every one runs a 12,000 RPM inline direct-drive Big-Plus spindle with 15,000 available, a spindle chiller for thermal stability, 300 PSI through-the-tool coolant, a twin-arm high-speed changer at 2.2 to 2.8 seconds tool-to-tool, and 2,700-block look-ahead. Fourth and fifth axis wiring is fitted from the factory, so adding a rotary later is a plug-in rather than a retrofit. What changes across the range is travel, table size and how much spindle power sits behind the cut — so size the machine to the part, and everything else about how it runs stays the same.

Questions

Worth asking before you buy.

What is the difference between 4+1 and full 5-axis simultaneous?
In 4+1, or 3+2, the rotary axes position the part and lock, then the machine cuts with three linear axes. Full simultaneous means all five axes move together during the cut, which is what impellers, blisks and complex contoured surfaces require. The GEN MILL 5X machines run either way, so you are not paying for simultaneous capability you only sometimes need.
Why do glass scales matter on the rotary axes?
Without scales, the control infers rotary position from the servo motor and gearing, so backlash and thermal growth go unmeasured. With glass scales the position is measured at the table itself. On a 5-axis machine every fraction of a degree of rotary error becomes a dimensional error at the tool, and it compounds with part height, so scales on B and C matter more as parts get taller.
What size machine do I need?
Match X travel to your longest part plus fixturing and tool clearance. The range runs from 12.59 inches on the PM320-5X to 63 inches on the 6328. Table load matters as much as travel on heavy work — 882 lb on the 2416 up to 3,397 lb on the 6328. Send us the part and we will size it.
What taper do these machines use?
CAT#40 throughout, except the PM320-5X which is HSK-E40. BT#40 is optional on all models, CAT#50 and BT#50 on the 6328, and HSK-63 on the 5X-16 and 5X-24. Balanced toolholders to G2.5 are required above 10,000 RPM.
What warranty comes with them?
One year on the machine, and three years on the Mitsubishi control, motors and drives. The PM320-5X uses a Fanuc 31i-B5 control with a two-year control, motor and drive warranty.
Before the first chip

A 5-axis envelope is only as good as what is holding the part.

Buy the machine and you have bought the reach. Mill a dovetail to hold the blank and you give a good part of that reach straight back — in spindle time, in material, and in the collision contour the fixture puts in the way of the tool.

A stamping station presses a tooth contour into the blank outside the machine. The part clamps by form fit on a 3 mm edge, at low clamping pressure, in a vise with almost no collision contour — so the tool reaches five sides with shorter, stiffer tooling and the spindle never spends a minute cutting a fixture.

HWR INOFlex® VL compensating 4-jaw chuck

Round, cubic and irregular parts clamped concentric in one chuck, on 160–1200 mm. A weight-optimised body and low overall height leave more of the trunnion’s rated load for the part itself, and centrifugal force compensation holds clamping force at speed.
